The Minnesota Edge spring/fall AAA independent hockey team will have open tryouts for the 1998 birth year girls program for the 2009 season. The tryouts will be on Sat Oct 25 2-3pm at the Hockey Development Center in Lakeville (On ice) and also on Sun Oct 26 at Wakota Civic Arena in South St.Paul from 9:40-10:40 am. The cost for each session is $10. The skaters are required to bring both a dark and light jersey and full gear. Waivers will be required to be filled out at registration for all skaters, no exceptions. Please respond info@mnedge.com , with player name, position played, last winter team and level, which session they prefer, and any general questions. The number of players will be capped at each session to ensure a good evalulation of the player talent, so respond early to insure your spot.
Common Questions
Please also read the post below (Welcome to Edge Hockey)
Will I be required to attend both sessions? As the 2 ice surfaces are different(one 3on3 size, one full) different skills can be showcased. It would be advantageous to skater/goalie to get seen as much as possible.
Will there be another tryout? At this point no further ice is booked, from these sessions we anticipate making offers to some players and form the 1998 Girls team.
When will the Coach get back to us? Decisions on who to give invitations to will be done within a week, then a deposit will be required.
Where will the practices be held in the spring and fall? See the post of Welcome to Edge Hockey for further information, but the practices will generally be held in Lakeville.
Will there be a practice team? I would prefer to have up to 5-8 spots available for practice players. The practice players would practice with the full team(all the practices, and play in a 3on3 league )supplemented with players from the tournament team. The 3on 3 team would play in Lakeville at the Hockey Development Center.
How many players on the Tournament team? I would hope to have 14 skaters and 2 goalies.
I have never played triple AAA before but am interested? There are diamonds in the rough everywhere, that said if there is question of the abilities, respond to info@mnedge.com with basic information(player level, where played, years skating) and we will help you with your decision to try out.
Will the practice players ever play on the tournament team? I also coach the 1996 boys MNedge team. This year we have 2 practice players to which we extended invitations to play on the tournament team.
Minnesota EDGE Hockey is an independent Tier-1 AAA youth hockey club committed to competing at the highest level. Our goal is to develop young hockey players in a way that is fun for them. We believe hockey is a great way to teach life’s lessons; as such, we strive to teach our players the importance of teamwork, character, commitment & competition. To find out more about us and understand our mission, please read on.
“Our mission is to teach life’s lessons through the game of hockey in a way that is fun, challenging, memorable and beneficial to our players”
Minnesota Edge 1998 Girls
Level of Competition: We are a independent hockey club. As such, we set our own schedule and always play to the highest level of competion. We usually practice 2-3 times a week and schedule games with the top teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canada. Typically we play in 1-2 tourney’s in the spring and 1 tourney in the fall. At least one of these tourneys is non local. The practice /game ratio will be between 3-4/1.We believe hockey players improve skills with practice, to become confident better players in games.
Other sports/activities:
Fundamentally, we believe a athlete should not be one sported, especially at a young age. Cross training with other sports is beneficial to develop the athlete. And that is why, we strive to develop athletes, and encourage other sports during our season. After growing up in the hockey factory of Canada, I can honestly say not one of the many NHL players I know, only played hockey growing up! Further, from the medical perspective of muscle development, there is literature discussing possible harm with one sport specialization at young age.
Having said this, we do expect our players to demonstrate attendance of a minimum 85%, as a commitment to the program. Our season is short, so this should not be an issue. Our season is typically structured as follows:
*Practices: 2-3 times a week during the spring and fall seasons. Typically 1.5-2hrs.
*Spring season: Mid march -Mid May
*Fall Season: Mid August- End of Sept (try to go right up to tryoutsfor winter season)
Community Service: From time to time, typically once a season, each team will participate in a non hockey related event to benefit the community. This is consistent with our mission.
Can players participate in other hockey programs? No. We have plenty of ice time, and we require that the Minnesota Edge hockey be the only spring/fall hockey team committment. Off season camps are encouraged in moderation, but be aware of burn out.
Philosophy on Winning: Striving to win every time you step on ice is important. But also important, is knowing that it impossible to win every game. We will be humble with winning, and gracious in defeat.
Playing time: Our basic philosophy is that if you pick the player, you play the player. Nothing good can come out of shortening your bench! That said, there may be some situations when some players see more ice time than others.
Training: We utilize various tools to train our athletes. Regular arena training is supplemented with the fantastic resource of the Hockey Development Center (HDC) in Lakeville. This state of art dryland facility with a speed ramp, stickhandling, shooting, and skating treadmill are just some of the tools used for training the hockey athlete. This is in conjuction with a on-ice 3on 3 rink directly attatched to the dryland. Both on-ice and off is used in both the spring and fall season, and opportunity is available to do the off ice in the summer (our off season) if desired.
Cost: The cost of Minnesota Edge hockey varies by team and is dependent on factors such as team size, ice time, and number of tournaments. Unlike many other AAA hockey teams, this is not a money making venture. The operatings cost are simply divided by the number of players. The total cost will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1395.00, which covers everything except the uniform cost. This typically is runs about $180, or $60 to rent. You can deduct $545 from the cost if you don’t want a season pass from the HDC for EDGE flex and Summer training.
